Karlovac: the city of four rivers – your base in the Croatian hinterland
In this article
Four rivers, one special town
It’s not for nothing that Karlovac is known as the town of four rivers. The Korana, the Mrežnica, the Kupa and the Dobra all converge here, giving the town an atmosphere you won’t find anywhere else. Strolling along the banks, swimming in the clear, flowing water or simply sitting and watching the water find its way – it’s all possible, right near the city centre.
As well as its rivers, Karlovac also has an interesting historic centre with Renaissance and Baroque influences. The town was founded in the sixteenth century as a military fortress, and this is still evident in the star-shaped layout of the old town. Strolling through those historic streets and squares gives you a very different impression of Croatia from the bustling coastal resorts.

More than just the town
The region around Karlovac is a treasure trove for nature lovers. Just 20 kilometres away lies Rastoke, the idyllic village of mills where the Slunjčica flows into the Korana and the water tumbles over old millstones. Little bridges, wooden cottages, waterfalls right beside you. Rastoke is the sort of spot you can have all to yourself on a quiet morning.

And then there’s Plitvice National Park, about 65 kilometres from Karlovac. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its system of turquoise lakes and waterfalls, is an absolute must-see. Head there early in the morning to experience it at its most peaceful. Zagreb, the bustling capital with fascinating museums, art galleries and lively terraces, is 80 kilometres away.

Rafting, canoeing and swimming in the great outdoors
The rivers around Karlovac aren’t just beautiful to look at. The Mrežnica offers excellent opportunities for rafting, whilst the Korana is perfect for canoeing. Along the way, you’ll pass waterfalls such as those at Lipa and Grdunac, where you can also go for a swim. KAMAT Adventure organises guided trips on these rivers, so you can get out on the water even without your own kit.

This is the Croatian countryside at its best: green, peaceful and full of activity all at once.

Accommodation near Karlovac
If you want to explore all this, you’ll need a good base. We’ve found one that really appeals to us: Camping Heart of Nature, a farm campsite in the rolling, wooded landscape of the Croatian countryside, about 30 kilometres from Karlovac.
What makes this campsite special is the combination of tranquillity, character and activities. The swimming pool has a retractable roof, so you can still go for a swim even in changeable weather. The Petrova klet restaurant serves authentic local dishes, its own wine and prosciutto daily from 12 noon to 10 pm. And in the campsite shop, you’ll find local organic produce: cheese, honey, sausages and wine. Canoeing, rafting and fishing on the nearby rivers Korana, Kupa, Mrežnica and Dobra can all be easily arranged from the campsite, as can bike hire for exploring the woods.
When to go?
The climate in the Croatian hinterland is pleasant from June to September. In July and August, daytime temperatures rise to an average of 28 degrees, whilst nights remain around 16 degrees. June and September are the quieter months, with average daytime temperatures of 25 and 23 degrees respectively, ideal if you prefer to avoid the crowds. Camping Heart of Nature is open from June to September.
Another side of Croatia
Most people know Croatia for the Dalmatian coast, the islands and Dubrovnik. All of that is wonderful, but the inland region reveals a completely different side. Fewer people, more space, and nature that will truly surprise you. Karlovac is the heart of that region, and it is, quite frankly, one of the country’s best-kept secrets.
I’d say: leave the coast behind for a while and discover what the Croatian hinterland has to offer. You won’t regret it.
Good restaurant. If you are a bigger group, I recommend to order food in advance. Also if you wish to have a bit more complicated dish like for example meat under the bell, order it in advance. The same complex also offers glamping, rooms, camping spots, soccer field, swimmingpool...

Owner of Lodge Holidays. For years I have personally selected the most beautiful small-scale glamping sites in Europe. Questions about a destination? I'd be happy to help.
